North Carolina Has the Best Wind Power Potential on the East Coast
This month, supporters packed the hearing rooms in Nags Head and Wilmington in favor of having offshore wind turbines in NC. Environment North Carolina’s Dave Rogers testified and hand-delivered 2,000 comments from wind-energy supporters to federal officials with the Bureau of Land Energy Management (BOEM). Offshore wind power is a much needed alternative to burning more coal which dirties our air and water. It also creates a stronger economy and good jobs, some of which can end up right here in the Triad. Also, the technology has already been proven throughout Europe.
This wasn’t the only milestone for offshore wind already in 2013. On January 2, with strong support from President Obama and backing from a bipartisan group of our state's congressional delegation--including Sen. Kay Hagan and Rep. David Price--critical tax credits for offshore wind power were extended for one more year as part of the “fiscal cliff” deal.
We still have a long way to go before North Carolina realizes its amazing offshore wind potential, which is greater than any other state’s along the Atlantic Coast. But already in 2013, we’re making real headway. If you haven't yet, please click here to tell BOEM that you support offshore wind for N.C.
