Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor

What does a Supervisor do?

  • Provides technical assistance to individuals, groups, schools and corporations on soil and water related concerns 
  • Makes recommendations based on the specific needs of the evaluation site
  • Votes on financial assistance, in the form of mini grants, for programming
  • A 5 member board with 3 elected supervisors and 2 supervisors appointed by Forsyth County Commisioners

 

Winston-Salem City Council

What does a City Council member do?

  • Enacts ordinances, rules and regulations as necessary for the general welfare of the city
  • Approves the city budget and sets property taxes and user fees
  • Appoints the City Manager and City Attorney
  • Approves appointments to City boards and commissions
  • An 8 member council where each member represents 1 of the 8 wards in the City of Winston-Salem

 

Forsyth County Commission

What does a Commissioner do?

  • Approves the annual county budget

  • Sets the County property tax rate
  • Establishes County policies on zoning and other land use matters
  • Appoints members of numerous citizen boards, committees and commissions
  • Comprised of 7 members; 4 from District B, 2 from District A, and 1 is elected at large 

 

NC House of Representatives

What does a State Representative do?

  • Represents a specific district within North Carolina in the state's lower legislative chamber
  • Initiates and votes on bills that affect the state's laws and policies
  • Serves on committees that consider specific issues and propose legislation
  • Comprised of 120 members that serve 2 year terms

 

NC State Senate

What does a State Senator do?

  • Represents the interests of their supporters in the North Carolina General Assembly
  • Introduces and votes on legislation that affects the state of North Carolina
  • Serves on committees that consider specific issues, such as education, healthcare, or the environment
  • Comprised of 50 members that serve 4 year terms

 

NC Superintendent of Public Instruction

What does a Superintendent do?

  • Both a member of the NC Council of State and of the State Board of Education
  • Directly supervises and administers the public school systems throughout NC
  • Ensures that students have an opportunity to receive the best education possible
  • Manages a budget of about $17 billion towards public education
