The City of Winston-Salem was awarded a $6 million RAISE grant from the US DOT to build the 1.2-mile multi-use greenway project known as the Long Branch Trail Extension. The City will provide local matching funds of $1.72 million to cover the total project cost of $8.6 million.
This project will extend the existing 1.6 mile Long Branch Trial from Downtown Winston-Salem into communities to the north, including those currently involved in the city’s ongoing Choice Neighborhood’s initiative.
The Long Branch Trail Extension will improve safety, increase the number of zero-emission walking and bicycling trips, and expand connectivity to jobs, education, and healthcare for neighborhoods that were harmed by both redlining and urban freeway construction in the last century. The Long Branch Trail Extension will be a multi-use path greenway with amenities like benches, attractive lighting, waste and recycling bins, bike repair stations and bikeshare docks.
