John Deem has been the climate change and environment reporter at the Winston-Salem Journal since November 2021. His work is funded by a grant from the 1Earth Fund and Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Deem’s reporting has focused largely on the impact of climate change on the Triad; how the region’s residents, companies and governments are responding (or not) by moving to electric vehicles, solar power and other more sustainable energy options; and environmental justice issues including the Winston Weaver fire and severe erosion tied to timber clearing at Smith Reynolds Airport.

Deem is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and a graduate of the University of Toledo but has spent more than half his life in the Carolinas, working as a reporter and editor for newspapers in both states. Most recently, he served as editor of the Statesville Record & Landmark and Mooresville Tribune.
